Davine Shampoo Sample Review

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo Sample Review

I received this sample in a previous Birchbox. My first impression – nice sized sample, perfect for a travel bag, and that the smell was light and slightly sweet, like ruby red grapefruit. It’s actually supposed to be from the Indian fig I think but to me it smells like citrus.

Ingredients

Aqua/Water/Eau (Water), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Olive Oil PEG 7 Esters, Coco Glucoside, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Olive Amphoacetate, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Opuntia Coccinellifera (Opuntia Coccinellifera FLower Extract), Panthenol, Glyceryl Oleate, Glycol Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Polyquaternium 44, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium 10, Dicaprylyl Ether, Propylene Glycol, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Acrylates/C10 30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, FD&C Red 4 (CI 14700 (Red 4), FD&C Blue 1 (CI 42090) (Blue 1), Perfume (Fragrance)

EWG Skin Deep gave it an overall hazard rating of 6 (scale of 1 to 10). It’s higher toxic ingredient culprits being propylparaben and fragrance. I’m not really sure why I thought this product was natural and “poo” free but for some reason I did. But I checked out the ingredient list and low and behold, a ton of ingredients and with Sodium Laureth Sulfate being the second ingredient, definitely not “poo” free.

Review

The sample was definitely enough for at least a dozen uses (for me at least). Depending on hair length you might get a little more or a little less. I try not to get all crazy but I did use enough to get a really thick later on my scalp. My hair did feel really clean after using it, after several uses it might even be too clean. I did have a smaller sample of the Love conditioner but it only lasted me about two applications. I think they did go well together but I don’t think it made much of a difference if you used it or another conditioner.

The smell was lovely, it’s light, it’s sweet and it’s really why I was excited to try it. The smell doesn’t last long however, it pretty much goes down the drain along with the shampoo.

Verdict

At $24 for 8 oz and with a toxicity rating of 6 on the EWG scale, I really wouldn’t go out of my way for this one. I’ll be happy to get more samples of it or get it at a ridiculously good sale but it’s not going to be my everyday, go to, or must have “poo”.

A hoarder of pretty paper, embellishments, and stamps with an abundant supply of makeup samples.
